Drake's Name Story

When Drake was still in my belly his name was going to be Timothy James....I planned on calling him Timmy. But when he came out 9lbs 12 oz he was no Timmy...I decided to call him Jared sounded more manly to me...his dad wanted to call him Drake. So that is how he got Jared Drake. When Drake's dad and I divorced Drake was 5 until Drake was 9 I still called him Jared. When he started acting his dad used Drake as his first name...a divided home had Drake at one house and Jared at the other...one Christmas Drake said "Mom for Christmas all I want is for you to call me Drake" so from that time on...Drake has been his first name.

 Drake's Nickname as a Child

Drake's nickname was Boop: After Drake learned how to walk, the kids would play imaginary baseball with him in the living room. They would have Drake run pretend bases. While he would be running the bases…the kids would say “Your SAFE” real loud and Drake would be happy. But then they started telling Drake he needed to SLIDE …they would yell “Slide Drake Slide”!!! Drake would be running, then he would just stop real fast and fall down on his butt…boop (his slide)… it was so funny the kids starting telling Drake to always slide after that… we all called him Boop. Imagine your little guy falling on his butt to be safe…when he landed on his butt we would say Boop

Drake at Little League

I love this memory…sad for Drake but it's still a fond memory.

Drake was about 5 or 6 and he was in little league…pee wee or something…anyway…he hit the ball and began running the bases…1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base….all the way home…but the ball was thrown home…and HIS coach said “YOU'RE OUT!”. Now it was soooooooooooooooooo close it was really hard to tel

l if he was truly out or not….and for being such a little guy he should have just been given the HOME RUN-but no, the coach said you’re OUT!!!

Drake was so shook up he ran off the field crying, and when he made eye contact with me (I was sitting on a blanket watching the game) he ran over to me…. A MOM understands and he just ran right into my arms… memories got to love them!!! I had all his favorite goodies and it wasn’t long before he was ok again…but I think he stopped wanting to be a baseball star that day

In The Car Playing Music

Drake has always loved music… when he was younger and living at home, we would be driving in the car Drake sitting shotgun. Drake would put a CD in and play a song then click over to a different song….for the whole drive (a little odd for me since I’m not into music like him). I use to watch his eyes and wonder what in the world is he thinking!!! Finally I asked him, “Drake what are you doing, what is going on in your head”!!! He told me, “Mom can you hear the different instruments, they are amazing”!!! It was then I knew his passion for music would always be a part of his life. Yesterday I went to see him, he was listening to some music and once again…I watched him as he separated the instruments….he put that big smile on his face and I thought…I have my memory… Enjoy!!!

Night Time with Drake

My favorite memories of Drake when he was still living at home-he was a night owl and once in awhile I would get up to spend time with him, he loved talking at night. We use to talk about all kinds of things life in general. Sometimes he would have me listen to a new song he wrote earlier that evening. I loved going into his room hearing him play and sing, he would also make up songs just off the top of his head...they were about a mood he was in...maybe about someone else...we use to love those nights...they always brought us closer.

Paintiing Drake's Room

I remember getting ready to paint Drake’s bedroom…I asked Drake “What color would you like it to be”? Right away he said “I want it to be Orange”!

Of course that was not the color I intended, but giving him the freedom to express himself I said ok. That being said I wanted the paint to be at least washable, so we painted it orange with a gloss…I DO NOT recommend that, Drake wanted it to be a flat finish…

I wish I would have listened to him, we had to repaint with a flat paint…Orange of course. And I have to admit, Drake ended up having the coolest room in the house.

Drake also decided to have one of his bedroom walls with bamboo attached…

He got a video for his TV of a fire (like a fireplace)…so with his orange room and a fireplace on his TV with his candles burning and his guitars…he had it made!!! He had a little Hawaiian getaway for sure!!!

Another thing about Drake…he loved having a clean bedroom, what a great memory.

Cops & Robbers

When Drake was little he use to have an amazing imagination, he used to pretend he was all kinds of characters.

One time, he was pretending cops and robbers…he was upstairs and I was downstairs…before you know it Drake was screaming…when I ran to the top of the stairs…I could see he scared himself! because there was no reason for him to scream.…he needed reassuring it was only his imagination, he was between 2-3 years old.

His brothers and sister would say “Hey copper stick e’m up or I’ll blow your head off” Well they thought it was funny, Drake use to repeat what they said and point a pretend gun with his fingers. Everyone use to laugh he had the cutest lisp and since he was still learning to form his words it really was adorable. Until one night, we all went out to dinner and there was a police officer at the restaurant waiting for his table by us. Drake began to put up his imaginary gun and started his aiming and the words were forming in his little brain, he began to say “stick e’m up copper……..”Thankfully I knew my little guy, I caught his little brain turning and when he put his little fingers together and raised his arms to point …I grabbed him up before any damage was done. We still laugh about that day, the story still lives on.
